Constitutional Background
Prime Minister Adolfas Slezevicius has now (Feb 1996) no longer the support of parliament or President Algirdas Brazauskas, but tries to hold on to his office until elections in November.
Lithuania concluded the Europe-Agreement with the
EU in June 1995.

- 25 Oct 1992: New Constitution adopted.
- 6 Sep 1992: USSR recognises the independence of Lithuania.
- 11 March 1990 (Indepenence Day): Declaration of independence from the former Soviet Union by adopting an "Act on the Re-establishment of the State of Lithuania".
