Constitutional Background

Tibet is not internationally recognized as an independent state. It is an autonomous region of the People's Republic of China ("Mainland China").

The religious leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, as well as many other Buddhist monks live in exile, mostly in India.

History and News

  • 1991: Exile government adopts Constitution.
  • 1965: Tibet becomes an Autonomous Region within China.
  • 1959: Unsuccessful revolt leads to exile of the Dalai Lama in India.
  • 1951: Tibet is occupied by and integrated into China.
  • 1911: Chinese Monarchy is overthrown and disconnects Tibet.
  • 13th century: Dalai Lama acknowledges the supreme authority of the Chinese Emperor.
  • 7th century: Foundation of Lhasa.  Bhuddhism in the form of Lamaism is established.
